"Find Me a Critiquer or Freelance Editor Please" Consultation

First, what is the difference between a critique and an edit?

A critique will help you focus on the building blocks of the manuscript such as character, plot, pacing, voice, dialogue, positive aspects, and marketability. It may offer some feedback on how to improve, but doesn’t focus on the big, structural aspects. A critique may come in the form of a one or one and a half page note with some general track changes comments. Critiques are less costly than an edit, have a quicker turnaround time, and are very useful to see if a project is working--or not yet.

An edit goes beyond the basic building blocks and offers suggestions on how improve the overall work. The editor will make comments on the manuscript and will identify and provide suggestions to solve issues on theme, voice, characterization, plotting, and pacing. An in-depth editorial letter will accompany the manuscript. Usually, an editor will not make changes to the manuscript for you, but will suggest ways to enhance and improve it based upon his/her knowledge of the industry, competition, and experience. A freelance edit will be more of an investment and will take longer to receive. But, a good edit can turn a project from meh to sellable.

This consultation includes:
  • a 15 minute discussion about your goals for your manuscript, your budget, and whether a critique or freelance edit is the best next step
  • a review of your project
  • a list of appropriate experts with contact information
  • troubleshooting if necessary
$50 payable 50% upon initiation and 50% upon completion *
